Retirees announce the figure they want for the lowest pension
Kazım Ergün, Chairman of the Turkey Retirees Association (TÜED), has demanded that the lowest pension be raised to the level of the minimum wage.
Kazım Ergün, Chairman of the Turkey Retirees Association (TÜED), recalled in a written statement that the minimum wage for 2024 was set at 20 thousand 2 lira gross and 17 thousand 2 lira net.
Stating that with the 2023 inflation calculated at 64.77 percent in consumer prices, civil servants and civil servant retirees will receive a 49.25 percent raise, while workers and Bağ-Kur retirees will receive a 37.57 percent increase, Ergün noted the following:
"In an environment where there is no longer a perception of price, the fact that TÜİK inflation is moving further away from market realities and the high cost of living is dragging retirees toward extreme poverty. Government officials and the parliament need to face the realities of the market. It is obvious that the announced inflation rates and the calculations made are contrary to the ordinary flow of life."
"THE REAL SOLUTION TO RETIREE PROBLEMS IS ADJUSTMENT"
Pointing out that the income inequality among retirees has increased with the 49.25 percent raise to be applied to civil servants and civil servant retirees, Ergün listed their demands as follows:
"Eliminating this situation is the common expectation of retirees. As TÜED, we want the lowest pensions to be brought to the level of the minimum wage, a flat-rate raise to be applied to all pensions, and for the retiree raise to be applied on top of that. The burden these increases will place on the Treasury is not more important than retirees living a life worthy of human dignity."
Calling for a transition to a permanent, inclusive model that improves the lives of retirees for a society where retirees are happy, Ergün stated, "The real solution to the problems of retirees is adjustment. Our demand and expectation from the Parliament is that the adjustment process be initiated as soon as possible and the necessary legal regulations be made."
