Signal of a new step regarding state support for High-Speed Train tickets

Following the restrictions implemented on subsidies in the electricity and natural gas sectors, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has put another significant state support on the table. The issue of removing state support for High-Speed Train (YHT) tickets has been brought to the agenda with the goal of reducing the burden on public expenditures.

While support for energy expenditures is being gradually narrowed, it is stated that a similar practice could be reflected in the transportation sector. Although there is no finalized decision yet, if such a change occurs, the redetermination of YHT ticket prices based on costs will be on the agenda. This could mean that passengers may encounter higher ticket prices in the coming period.

Gradual reductions in electricity subsidies began to be implemented to cover the years 2025 and 2026. As of January 1, 2025, subsidies for residential subscribers consuming more than 5 thousand kilowatt-hours of electricity annually were removed, and this limit was lowered to 4 thousand kilowatt-hours in 2026. Thus, users exceeding the limit began paying for electricity without state contribution. Similarly, with the new system launched on April 4 for natural gas, support ends when consumption limits are exceeded, and subscribers are billed at higher tariffs.

In the event of a possible removal of support for YHT, no changes are planned for the current subsidy system covering main lines, regional trains, and suburban lines. Ministry officials stated, "There is no change in question for main lines, regional trains, and suburban lines. State support will continue and is continuing."

According to information provided by ministry sources, although various evaluations are being made regarding the removal of state support for YHT tickets, there is no finalized decision. However, it is stated that the process could ultimately pave the way for cost-based pricing. If such a development is implemented, it is expected that increasing operating costs will be directly reflected in YHT tickets.

In the background of these evaluations in transportation, the financial statement of TCDD Taşımacılık AŞ also draws attention. It was recorded that the company incurred a loss of 25 billion 79 million 636 thousand 706 TL at the end of 2024. The fact that passing costs on to passengers has come to the agenda to reduce the pressure on the budget points to a new pricing era in transportation in the coming period.
