Significant development in foreign exchange-protected deposit accounts
The decline in foreign exchange-protected deposit and participation accounts in the final week of 2025 has led to the total size of these products falling to 6.96 billion TL.
The erosion in foreign exchange-protected Turkish lira deposit and participation accounts continues. As of the final week of 2025, the total balance of these accounts decreased by 1 billion 312 million liras, falling to 6 billion 960 million liras. Thus, a significant outflow occurred in KKM before the new year.
Current financial data regarding the banking sector pointed to a different picture. According to the latest weekly bulletin published by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK), the banking sector's total loan volume increased by approximately 300 billion 575 million liras in the week ending December 26. Consequently, the sector's total loan volume reached 22 trillion 877 billion 11 million liras, up from 22 trillion 576 billion 437 million liras.
On the deposit side, significant growth was noted. When all banks and interbank transactions are included, the sector's total deposits increased by 744 billion 463 million liras, rising to 27 trillion 378 billion 656 million liras. With these developments, while deposit and loan expansion stood out in the banking system, the decline in foreign exchange-protected deposit products continued.
Experts attribute the decrease in KKM accounts to rising deposit interest rates and the shift of investors and savers toward alternative products.
