Silage corn production provides economic gains for farmers in Erzincan

With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the area for silage corn cultivation has been expanded in Erzincan. Planted on 30 thousand decares this year, silage corn is providing economic benefits to farmers by reducing costs in the livestock sector. As a strategic feed source for the approximately 117 thousand cattle and 650 thousand sheep and goats in the city, silage corn is bringing smiles to the faces of livestock breeders.

The Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry stated that silage corn plays a critical role in animal nutrition, saying, "Silage corn increases milk quality and yield in dairy cows, while directly contributing to meat quality in livestock. It is also of great importance in terms of reducing our farmers' costs and increasing their income."

PRODUCTION AREA IS EXPANDING

Stating that the area for silage corn, which was planted on 26 thousand decares last year, has increased to 30 thousand decares this year, the Provincial Director expressed that the initial harvest data is positive. He emphasized that local production is reducing dependence on external sources and strengthening the farmers' position.

FARMER DEMAND IS INCREASING

Producers state that silage corn has become indispensable for livestock farming. They explain that the harvested corn is shredded by combine harvesters or tractors, transported to silage pits, and then compacted and covered to be prepared for the winter months. In this way, breeders can increase productivity by offering their animals feed with high nutritional value.

With this year's increase, Erzincan has become one of the leading provinces in the region in silage corn production. Sector representatives state that the widespread production will make a major contribution to both farmers and the national economy in the long term.
