The poor's meal: Tea and simit... Erdoğan's past remarks back on the agenda

The cheapest meal known, tea and simit, has also been affected by the price hikes on everything. This situation has brought back to the agenda the remarks made years ago by President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding the government of that time.

Before coming to power, Erdoğan had criticized Prime Minister Çiller by calculating the cost of tea and simit. Erdoğan had said, "This cruel administration does not even deem a glass of tea and a simit worthy for this noble nation. How can you follow them?"

In the current situation, the price of an average glass of tea in Istanbul is set at 20 TL, and the price of the cheapest simit is 12.5 TL. HIGHER THAN A RETIREE'S PENSION

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel also criticized Erdoğan's tea-simit calculation at the CHP Group Meeting today. In his speech, Özel pointed out that the tea-simit calculation has exceeded the retiree's pension. Özel said: “Tayyip Erdoğan did the simit-tea calculation, said 'shame on you,' and asked for votes. Now let's look at the simit-tea calculation. Today in Ankara, a simit is 10 TL, tea is 15 TL. One tea and one simit is 25 TL. The family is 5 people, we are calculating the lowest. 125 TL for one meal, 375 TL for 3 meals, and it becomes 11,250 TL in 30 DAYS.”
