The problem of long-term unemployment is growing: It has increased by 16 points in the last year

Along with the economic crisis, the waiting period for job seekers is also increasing. The increase in job search durations has emerged with İŞKUR data.

According to the report by Havva Gümüşkaya from BirGün; the increase in those waiting for work for more than a year has reached striking dimensions. 

"IT INCREASED BY 16 POINTS AT ONCE"

The International Labour Organization (ILO) defines those who have been unemployed for one year or more as long-term unemployed. As the duration of unemployment lengthens, the unemployment problem becomes chronic and harder to solve. While there is a decrease in TÜİK's narrow-defined unemployment rate, the increase in job search durations discourages the desire to work. Unemployed people who try to hold on to the labor market for a long time eventually give up looking for work. 33 percent of the unemployed registered with İŞKUR, which is the most common job search channel, have been looking for work for more than a year. This rate was at the 17 percent level in the same period last year. In the one-year period between October 2022 and October 2023, long-term unemployment increased by 16 points at once.

"IT WAS AT THE 21 PERCENT LEVEL"

According to İŞKUR's October data, 838 thousand 112 of the 2 million 519 thousand 163 unemployed registered with the institution have been looking for work for more than a year. The age range where long-term unemployment is most common was the 30-39 age group. 39 percent of the registered unemployed in this age group have been waiting for work for one year or longer. In October 2022, long-term unemployment among the unemployed in the 30-39 age group was at the 21 percent level.

"37 PERCENT OF REGISTERED ASSOCIATE DEGREE GRADUATES ARE LOOKING FOR WORK"

Women's job search durations are longer compared to men. While 37 percent of female unemployed registered with İŞKUR have been looking for work for more than a year, this rate is at the 30 percent level for men. In the İŞKUR data for the same period last year, 18 percent of female unemployed and 16 percent of male unemployed were long-term unemployed.

40 out of every 100 young female unemployed in the 25-29 age range, 44 of those between 30-34, and 43 of those between 35-39 have been looking for work for more than a year. Long-term unemployment is more common among associate degree graduates compared to other education levels. 37 percent of the 312 thousand 527 registered unemployed associate degree graduates, which is 116 thousand 339, have been looking for work for more than a year.
