These banknotes will be redesigned

The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to renew the euro banknotes that have been in circulation since 2002. This change is being implemented to make the banknotes both more durable and more secure against counterfeiting. Furthermore, the new designs are being prepared to reflect Europe's cultural and natural wealth.

According to a report by Sözcü, the wear and tear caused by the heavy use of the banknotes is one of the primary reasons for the change. However, the ECB aims not only to increase physical durability but also to strengthen the security features on the banknotes. During this process, symbols representing Europe's cultural diversity will also be added to the banknotes.

The new designs will be shaped around two main themes. Firstly, figures who have left their mark on Europe's cultural history, such as Marie Curie, Leonardo da Vinci, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Cervantes, will be featured on the banknotes. Secondly, natural beauties will be highlighted with bird species native to Europe, such as the common kingfisher, the stork, and the pied avocet.

One side of lower-denomination banknotes, such as the 5-euro note, will feature snapshots of daily life from different European cities. The other side will use symbols of Europe's fundamental institutions. The ECB began this design process in 2021 and also took the opinions of the European public into account.

The design process for the new banknotes has not yet been completed, but according to the ECB's plans, they are expected to be put into circulation within the next few years following final approvals.
