To pay 1 billion euros for Gen Z

The popular fashion app Depop was founded in 2011 and has become one of the preferred platforms for the younger demographic in recent years. The seller is the US-based company Etsy, which had acquired Depop five years ago for 1.3 billion euros. The company announced that it would use the proceeds from the sale to make investments in its core marketplace and for general corporate purposes.

According to data obtained by Depop at the end of December 2025, there are 7 million active buyers in the application's marketplace. While 90 percent of these users are under the age of 34, there are more than 3 million sellers actively selling on the platform. With the popularization of resale fashion, especially among young people, finding unique products at more affordable prices and reinforcing sustainable consumption habits have become widespread. Preventing unused clothing from ending up in landfills also supports this trend.

eBay CEO Jamie Iannone stated that this acquisition would make a significant contribution to their company in reaching a younger customer base. Iannone said that Depop would achieve stronger growth potential in the long term by expanding its service network under the eBay umbrella. According to the agreement, Depop will continue to operate while maintaining its own brand identity and culture.

The entire purchase price will be paid in cash, and the transaction has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the second quarter of the year.

Following the public announcement of the news, eBay shares rose by more than 7 percent, while Etsy shares saw an increase of approximately 15 percent in after-hours trading.
