Tourism continues to recover this year following the COVID-19 pandemic

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the number of tourists worldwide is estimated to be around 700 million. Between January and July 2023, tourists traveled internationally; this figure represents a 43% increase compared to the same period last year, but is still 16% below 2019 levels.

The UNWTO expects international tourism to reach 80% to 95% of pre-pandemic levels this year, depending on whether pent-up demand and the desire of tourists to travel are strong enough to defy challenging economic and political conditions.

According to the results of the UNWTO Panel of Tourism Experts, the pandemic or the unequal rollout of vaccines are no longer seen as major obstacles on the path to full recovery. The economic environment and high transport and accommodation costs are now seen as the biggest obstacles to international travel demand.
