Trump's steel tariff decision impacts European stock markets
U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement that he will increase steel tariffs has caused a decline in European stock markets.
U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to raise steel tariffs from 25 percent to 50 percent created a negative atmosphere in European markets on the first trading day of the week. The Stoxx Europe 600 index fell 0.6 percent to 545.22 points, while Germany's DAX 40 index decreased by 0.9 percent to 23,800 points.
In the UK, the FTSE 100 index traded at 8,744 points with a 0.3 percent loss, while Italy's FTSE MIB 30 index fell 0.4 percent to 39,914 points.
France's CAC 40 index dropped 1 percent to the 7,676.64 point level, while Spain's IBEX 35 index remained at 14,122.46 points with a 0.2 percent loss.
TRUMP'S STATEMENTS AND GLOBAL IMPACTS
Trump's decision to increase steel tariffs and his harsh rhetoric toward China have heightened global risk perception. This approach has led to selling pressure in European stock markets. The manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data to be released today is among the issues investors are following closely.
While concerns over inflation and recession in the region persist, the economic data to be released will shape the markets. Weakening manufacturing activity in the Eurozone is creating negative effects on growth, while developments regarding trade wars and tariffs are being closely monitored.
Increasing conflicts in the Russia-Ukraine War have heightened interest in the talks in Istanbul. The meetings to be held in Istanbul today are being closely followed by European investors.
In the UK, the house price index exceeded expectations, rising 0.5 percent on a monthly basis and 3.5 percent on an annual basis. Analysts stated that in addition to manufacturing PMI data, statements by U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Jerome Powell will also be influential on the markets.
