TÜİK announces: How much did citizens spend per night on vacation?

According to the report, tourism revenue in the first quarter, consisting of January, February, and March, increased by 5.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 8 billion 784 million 800 thousand dollars.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has published its Tourism Statistics report for the first quarter. With the 2024 revision, which serves as a continuation of the revision carried out in 2022 for Tourism Statistics, the use of data regarding day-trip visitors obtained from the General Directorate of Security has begun, calculations have been made based on the type of border gate used by visitors (sea, rail, air, land), and the sampling design has been updated. As a result, the planned revisions for tourism income and expenditure have been completed, and said revision has been applied to cover the period from 2012 to 2023.

REVENUE INCREASED

Tourism revenue in the first quarter, consisting of January, February, and March, increased by 5.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 8 billion 784 million 800 thousand dollars. 21% of tourism revenue was generated from citizens residing abroad who visited our country.

Visitors organize their trips either personally or through package tours. Of the expenditures made this quarter, 7 billion 775 million 627 thousand dollars consisted of personal expenditures, while 1 billion 9 million 174 thousand dollars consisted of package tour expenditures.

INCREASE IN NUMBER OF VISITORS

The number of visitors departing from our country in the first quarter of 2024 increased by 10.1% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 9 million 10 thousand 90 people. 21.6% of the visitors consisted of citizens residing abroad, totaling 1 million 942 thousand 94 people.

WHAT WAS SPENT THE MOST ON?

In this quarter, the average nightly expenditure of visitors departing from our country was 93 dollars. The average nightly expenditure of citizens residing abroad was 64 dollars.

In this quarter, the share of food and beverage expenditures within tourism revenue was 22.6%, the share of international transportation expenditures was 16.7%, and the share of package tour expenditures was 11.5%. Compared to the same period of the previous year, food and beverage expenditures increased by 2.8%, international transportation expenditures by 11.8%, and package tour expenditures by 19.4%.

COMPARED TO LAST YEAR...

Tourism expenditure, which consists of the expenditures of our citizens residing in the country who visit other countries, increased by 11.3% compared to the same quarter of last year, reaching 1 billion 779 million 649 thousand dollars. Of this, 1 billion 444 million 620 thousand dollars consisted of personal expenditures, and 335 million 30 thousand dollars consisted of package tour expenditures.

TRIPS ABROAD

In this quarter, the number of citizens visiting abroad increased by 18.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 2 million 449 thousand 225 people. Their average expenditure per capita was 727 dollars.
