Türk-İş's minimum wage demand has been revealed

The Minimum Wage Determination Commission held its first meeting yesterday (December 12). While the labor side did not attend the commission, no specific figures were discussed at the table.

The Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (TÜRK-İŞ), which did not attend the commission's meeting, wrote a letter presenting its demands to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

According to the report in Sözcü, although Türk-İş did not declare a specific figure, the minimum wage approaches 40,000 TL when the demands are aggregated.

If the demands submitted by Türk-İş to the Ministry are met, the minimum wage would need to be increased by 78.8 percent to 39,525 liras.

Türk-İş used the same calculation method last year and had announced its demand as 29,583 liras. This means that Türk-İş has increased the figure it demands for the net minimum wage by 33.6 percent over the last year. In the letter from Türk-İş, which also points to a series of problems in working life ranging from minimum wage earners to retirees, and from child labor to workplace homicides, it was first requested that the 14.38 percent inflation loss that was not compensated last year be addressed. After this is done, Türk-İş requested that the high price increases in food, transportation, rent, and education be covered, and in addition to these, it demanded that the increase in welfare provided by economic growth be reflected to the workers. It is stated that all these demands point to a minimum wage of 39,525 TL.
