Turkey's economic map... The poorest province has been identified

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) has released the 2024 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) results by province. The figures revealed that economic power in Turkey is concentrated in specific provinces and that the imbalance in income distribution is deepening.

ISTANBUL ALONE ACCOUNTED FOR 29.2 PERCENT OF THE NATIONAL ECONOMY

According to 2024 GDP data calculated at current prices, Istanbul reached an economic size of 13 trillion 10 billion 693 million TL, accounting for 29.2 percent of Turkey's total production on its own.

Ankara accounted for 10.5 percent of the national economy with 4 trillion 672 billion TL, while İzmir accounted for 5.7 percent with 2 trillion 562 billion TL. At the bottom of the list, the provinces with the lowest economic capacity were Bayburt, Ardahan, and Gümüşhane.

53 PERCENT OF THE ECONOMY CONCENTRATED IN JUST 5 PROVINCES

Another striking aspect of the TURKSTAT data was the concentration of economic power in certain centers. The top five provinces with the highest share of GDP accounted for 53 percent of Turkey's total production.

THE GAP IN PER CAPITA INCOME

There is also a significant gap in the per capita GDP ranking, which directly reflects income levels:

Istanbul: 802 thousand 669 TL

Kocaeli: 788 thousand 873 TL

Ankara: 788 thousand 859 TL

The provinces at the bottom of the list are:

Şanlıurfa: 188 thousand 144 TL

Ağrı: 194 thousand 660 TL

Van: 203 thousand 49 TL

It was noted that the average income in Istanbul is more than 4 times the income of a citizen in Şanlıurfa.

SECTORAL LEADERSHIP IN ISTANBUL, KONYA LEADS IN AGRICULTURE

When sectoral data is examined, it is seen that Istanbul maintains its leadership in all economic sectors except for agriculture and certain service areas.

64 percent of information and communication activities,

59.3 percent of the finance and insurance sector took place in Istanbul.

In agriculture, the leadership belonged to Konya with a 5.6 percent share.

ADIYAMAN GREW, ERZİNCAN SHRANK

There were also notable changes in the economic performance of the provinces compared to the previous year.

The earthquake-stricken province of Adıyaman topped the list by recording 31.4 percent growth due to the base effect.

Erzincan, on the other hand, became the province that shrank the most in 2024 with a 7.9 percent contraction.
