Turkey's external debt rose in the last quarter of the year
In the last quarter of 2025, Turkey's total gross external debt stock increased by 4 percent, reaching 519.9 billion dollars.
Current figures regarding Turkey's external debt data have been released as of the fourth quarter of 2025. A notable increase in the external debt stock was observed during this period.
In the last quarter of the year, external debt grew by 4 percent compared to the previous quarter, with the debt stock reaching 519.9 billion dollars. During this process, short-term external debt saw a slight increase of 0.4 percent to 167.4 billion dollars, while long-term external debt rose by 5.8 percent to 352.6 billion dollars.
When examining the distribution of debt among sub-sectors, it was observed that the public sector's external debt increased by 5.4 percent, reaching a total of 196.8 billion dollars. The private sector's external debt reached a level of 298.2 billion dollars with a 4.5 percent increase. On the other hand, the Central Bank's external liabilities decreased by 10 percent, falling to 25 billion dollars.
In the distribution of the external debt stock by instrument, loans accounted for the highest share at 45.8 percent. Loans were followed by debt securities at 19.5 percent and deposit liabilities at 17.6 percent. When evaluated in terms of currency, nearly half of the external debt, at 48.1 percent, was denominated in dollars, while 29.7 percent was in euros, 12 percent in Turkish lira, and the remaining 10.1 percent consisted of other currencies.
Looking at the repayment maturities of external debts, it was stated that the period with the highest concentration of principal payments for loans and debt securities was for maturities of 24 months and longer. While principal payments between 13-24 months occurred at a limited level, it was noted that in the short term, a more intensive payment burden arising particularly from loans used by the private sector came to the fore.
