Turkey's foreign currency map: You won't believe the numbers! Which provinces have the most foreign currency deposits?

While policies implemented in the economy have increased interest in the Turkish Lira, exits from the Kur Korumalı Mevduat (KKM) scheme have also fallen below 1 trillion TL. However, apart from only 3 cities, other provinces in Turkey have continued to accumulate foreign currency. 

According to the news compiled by CNBC-e from the foreign currency deposit data in the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency's (BDDK) FinTürk database, Istanbul maintains its leading position in Turkey in foreign currency investments, in addition to being a financial center.

According to the data announced by the BDDK, there are foreign currency deposits worth a total of 2 trillion 575 billion 235 million TL in Istanbul. The amount of foreign currency per capita in the city has reached the level of 164 thousand TL as of 2024. While this figure was recorded as 15 thousand 324 TL last year, the increase rate within the last year was 5.59%.

The city with the lowest level of foreign currency deposits was determined to be Hakkari. While the total foreign currency deposit in Hakkari was 1 billion 623 million 805 thousand TL, the amount of foreign currency per capita in the city was recorded as only 5 thousand 754 TL. Hakkari was followed by Şanlıurfa with 5 thousand 958 TL and Şırnak with 5 thousand 971 TL.

The cities with the most foreign currency deposits after Istanbul are, respectively:

• Ankara: 765 billion 795 million 325 thousand TL
• İzmir: 289 billion 820 million 502 thousand TL
• Antalya: 202 billion 925 million 246 thousand TL

FASTEST INCREASE IN FOREIGN CURRENCY SAVINGS IS IN BATMAN

Batman was the province that increased its foreign currency deposits per capita the most in Turkey within the last year. While the total foreign currency deposit in Batman reached the level of 9 million 640 thousand TL, the annual increase rate was recorded as 50.41%. While Ardahan took second place on the list of provinces experiencing the fastest increase, Bilecik settled into third place with an increase of 44.09%.

The total foreign currency deposit in Bilecik is at the level of 5 million 873 thousand 492 TL.

Rare Cities Selling Foreign Currency

In the latest evaluations made regarding foreign currency deposits across Turkey, Ardahan was determined to be the province with the lowest foreign currency savings. According to the data of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB), the total foreign currency deposit in Ardahan is at the lowest level in the country with 1 million 137 thousand 251 TL.

However, a remarkable point is that Ardahan is among the provinces that have increased the amount of foreign currency per capita the most in the last year. Recording an increase of 58.77%, Ardahan placed second in Turkey in this area.
