Turkey's international investment position data released

The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) has shared the International Investment Position (IIP) developments for October. The net IIP, defined as the difference between Turkey's external assets and liabilities, posted a deficit of 295 billion dollars in October. The IIP had posted a deficit of 298.3 billion dollars in September.

Turkey's international investment position data released

The net IIP, defined as the difference between Turkey's external assets and its liabilities to the rest of the world, stood at minus 295 billion US dollars at the end of October 2023, compared to minus 317.1 billion US dollars at the end of 2022.
When the sub-items of assets are examined, the reserve assets item decreased by 2.0 percent compared to the end of 2022, reaching 126.2 billion US dollars, while the other investments item decreased by 1.5 percent to 119.1 billion US dollars. Among the sub-items of other investments, banks' effective and deposits in foreign currency and Turkish Lira increased by 1.8 percent to 45.8 billion US dollars.
When the sub-items of liabilities are examined, direct investments (capital and other capital) decreased by 21.3 percent compared to the end of 2022, reaching 160.9 billion US dollars, influenced by changes in market values and exchange rates.
Portfolio investments decreased by 0.5 percent compared to the end of 2022, reaching 92.8 billion US dollars. While the stock of shares held by non-residents decreased by 0.7 percent compared to the end of 2022 to 28.6 billion US dollars, the stock of Government Domestic Debt Securities (GDDS) held by non-residents decreased by 12.5 percent to 1.1 billion US dollars, and the Treasury's bond stock (after deducting the bond stock purchased by residents) increased by 3.9 percent to 43.6 billion US dollars.
In the same period, other investments increased by 6.8 percent compared to the end of 2022, reaching 349.8 billion US dollars. While the foreign currency deposits of non-residents in domestic banks decreased by 1.5 percent compared to the end of 2022 to 41 billion US dollars, TL deposits increased by 15.7 percent to 16.3 billion US dollars.
The total loan stock of banks increased by 8.6 percent to 61.1 billion US dollars, while the total loan stock of other sectors decreased by 1.5 percent to 99.7 billion US dollars.
