What should the pension have been: Economist Meriç Köyatası explains!
Economic journalist Meriç Köyatası answered Mustafa Büyüksipahi's questions on Gündem 12. Making critical assessments regarding the country's economy, Köyatası revealed what the pension amount should actually have been.
The unbridled pace of inflation and the cost of living have particularly affected retirees struggling to make ends meet on low pensions.
The government's long-term promises cannot hide the scale of the economic crisis that is deeply shaking the citizens.
Economic journalist and 12punto columnist Meriç Köyatası answered Mustafa Büyüksipahi's questions about the economy on the Gündem 12 program.
Responding to the question "How will the economy improve?" by saying "The public will first reflect their dissatisfaction at the ballot box," Köyatası stated, "We have been getting poorer for the last 20 years. Technology develops, but our purchasing power as a society is falling. The economy will not improve without showing a reaction at the ballot box. It is naive to expect a solution from those who brought the economy to this state. The first step starts with the citizen."
61 PERCENT OF PENSION STOLEN
Stating that the data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) does not reflect the truth, Köyatası said, "In the period from September 2021 to May 2024, TÜİK's fake inflation was 299 percent. However, ENAG's inflation is more accurate at 900 percent... The real inflation in Turkey over the 32-month period is 900 percent. In July 2021, the lowest pension was 2,523. What happened today, it is 10,000. That is, it increased by 296 percent. If it had increased according to real inflation, the pension that should be paid today would be around 25,000 TL. If we went back further, this amount should have reached 45,000 liras. In other words, they stole 61 percent of retirees' salaries with the 'nas' comedy and distributed it to their cronies."
