Warning from the SSI: Informal employment has negative effects on both employers and employees

Stating that informal employment leads to tax and revenue losses for the state and, more importantly, causes individuals to live without social protection and security, Nurcan Yurt Şenel said that reducing the habit of informal work will undoubtedly be possible by eliminating the causes that give rise to it.

Noting that the social security system aims to provide citizens with healthcare throughout their lives, ensure a minimum income level, protect individuals against professional, physiological, and socio-economic risks, and compensate for damages arising from these risks, Provincial Director Şenel said, "Everyone who starts working is legally required to be included in the social security system. Employees have the right to demand that this right be fulfilled by the employer and to resort to legal remedies if it is not. Employers are also obligated to report both themselves and the people they employ to the social security institution," she said.

Pointing out that there are many ways for employees to quickly learn whether their work has been reported by their employers or at what earnings level they have been reported, Şenel stated, "When employees think they are being employed without insurance or that their wages or working hours are being under-reported, they can submit their notifications and complaints to the Social Security Institution through the following channels: They can call the Labor and Social Security Communication Center 'ALO 170' 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They can submit their complaints to the nearest provincial social security directorate or social security center, and quickly learn whether they are employed with insurance and at what earnings level they are reported. They can also submit all kinds of requests, complaints, notifications, opinions, and suggestions through the Presidential Communication Center (CİMER)," she said.

Reminding that insurance premium incentives mean that the state covers a certain portion and duration of the insurance premiums that employers are required to pay for purposes such as increasing employment and production in the country, preventing informal employment, reducing regional development disparities, increasing the employment of disabled individuals, and increasing the participation of youth and women in the workforce, Şenel said, "In general, in order to benefit from these incentives, employers must fulfill basic obligations such as not employing uninsured workers, submitting the necessary reporting documents to the SSI on time, paying their premiums regularly and on time, and not making false insurance reports. In addition, there are some different special conditions for each incentive application. Depending on the type of incentive, the state covers up to the entire employer's share, or both the insured's share and the employer's share, allowing employers to significantly reduce their costs," she stated.
