Young people are turning to this profession for high income

The career preferences of the new generation show that a deep-rooted change is taking place in Turkey's labor market. In recent years, technical fields that offer quick financial gains and opportunities for independent work instead of desk jobs are receiving intense interest from young people. In particular, hands-on professions such as electrical work and plumbing are rapidly attracting the attention of the younger generation.

GEN Z IS CHANGING HABITS

The decline in interest in traditional white-collar jobs has directed young people toward sectors that require more concrete skills. According to information provided by employers, there has been a significant increase in applications for apprenticeship and assistant technician positions recently. By entering these professions, young people can both earn an income in a shorter time and take advantage of flexible working hours.

Another notable feature of technical fields is that they provide the opportunity to build a personal reputation, develop one's own client portfolio in the sector, and engage in entrepreneurship. Many young people prefer to work independently and start their own businesses after gaining a few years of experience.

Striking salaries are one of the main factors fueling this interest. As of 2026, the earnings of young people working as electricians and in plumbing jobs have surpassed those of many experienced white-collar workers. The monthly income of experienced electricians who take on jobs in corporate firms or large projects ranges between 60,000 and 80,000 TL. The salaries of assistant technicians who are new to the profession and learning basic tasks start at a minimum of 50,000 TL.

The earnings of young technicians who specialize in increasingly common smart home systems and industrial electrical projects can climb up to 90,900 TL. Similarly, the net salaries of experienced plumbers dealing with combi boilers, mechanical infrastructure, and modern heating systems are measured at around 65,000 TL.
