Women take to the streets on the 1st anniversary of the murders of İkbal and Ayşenur

On October 4, 2024, 19-year-old Semih Çelik brutally murdered İkbal Uzuner at his home in Eyüpsultan, Istanbul, and shortly thereafter, Ayşenur Halil at the Edirnekapı Walls in Fatih. He then took his own life following the murders.

On the 1st anniversary of the murders, Saturday, October 4, women will take to the streets in three major cities at the call of the Women's Solidarity Committees (KDK).

The gatherings will take place in Istanbul at 19:30 in front of the Kadıköy Bull Statue, in Ankara at 18:00 in front of the İş Bank on Sakarya Street, and in Izmir at 18:00 in front of the Penguen Bookstore in Alsancak.

The statement from the KDK is as follows:

"On the 1st anniversary of the monstrous murders of İkbal and Ayşenur, we are meeting to say that commemoration is not enough, we are demanding accountability.

Women are still being murdered every day. With weapons of unknown origin, despite restraining orders, despite electronic monitoring tags... Under these circumstances, we do not accept that only the perpetrator of the murder is held responsible.

Our call is to all women who say they no longer want to attend funerals or hold commemorations!

We have an account to settle with everyone who has negligence and responsibility in femicides and violence against women, starting with Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya. You are guilty!"

"WE HAVE AN ACCOUNT TO SETTLE"

KDK official Senem Doruk İnam stated the following regarding the planned actions: "Every day we open our eyes to a new femicide. Time passes, but the story never changes. Women's requests for restraining orders and cries for help are met with weapons. We are dying. A year passes, and neither the murderers nor those responsible are held accountable.

Enough is enough; we do not want to attend funerals or hold commemorations. That is why it is time to demand accountability.

Ayşenur and İkbal were murdered on October 4, 2024. One year later, on the same day, we will say that commemoration is not enough, we are demanding accountability.

We have an account to settle with everyone who has negligence and responsibility in femicides, starting with the Minister of Interior."
