Female dominance in universities is rising! Number of female students and female academics has surpassed men

According to data from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), 52 out of every 100 people studying at universities in Turkey are female students. There are a total of 7 million 503 thousand 181 students and 181 thousand 498 teaching staff across 208 higher education institutions. Of these students, 3 million 879 thousand 512 are female, while 3 million 623 thousand 669 are male.

Last year, the proportion of female students attending universities surpassed male students for the first time, reaching 50.8 percent. This year, that rate has increased further to reach 51.7 percent.

While the number of academics in universities was 74 thousand 134 in 2003, it reached 181 thousand 498 in 2024. Of these academics, 97 thousand 291 are male and 84 thousand 207 are female. Consequently, the proportion of female academics among the total number of academics stands at 46.4 percent.

The number of women has also surpassed men among research assistants and lecturers. Out of 42 thousand 350 research assistants, 22 thousand 792 are women and 19 thousand 558 are men; among 35 thousand 776 lecturers, 18 thousand 444 are women and 17 thousand 332 are men. In this case, the proportion of female research assistants was recorded at 53.8 percent, and the proportion of female lecturers at 51.6 percent.
