Live surgery experience for high school students at the Young Medicine Academy

As part of the "Young Medicine Academy" project conducted by the Istinye University Faculty of Medicine, high school students aiming for a medical education have the opportunity to observe the operating room environment up close.

Within the scope of the project, which was launched in 2013 by Prof. Dr. Türker Kılıç, Dean of the Istinye University Faculty of Medicine, high school students with parental consent are admitted to operating rooms within the framework of established procedures. In programs conducted in groups consisting of a limited number of students, participants have the opportunity to examine hospital operations, the working routine of physicians, and the operating room environment on-site.

Within the scope of the program, students follow surgeries in different fields such as liver surgery, brain tumor surgeries, spinal curvature operations, and prostate surgery live. Students also come together with scientists and academics to receive information about medical education and the medical profession.

Making a statement regarding the project, Prof. Dr. Türker Kılıç drew attention to the importance of first-hand experience in career selection. Stating that students have the chance to observe not only the surgical processes but also the intense working pace and responsibilities of medicine, Kılıç expressed that the program contributes to young people making their career choices more consciously.

It was reported that some of the students participating in the project solidified their goals of becoming doctors, while some students realized that the operating room environment was not suitable for them and turned to different fields. It was stated that the program aims for students in the university preference process to gain a more realistic perspective.
