12-YEAR COMPULSORY EDUCATION DURATION IS BEING SHORTENED
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin made notable statements during a live broadcast he attended. Tekin announced that the study regarding the shortening of the 12-year compulsory education has been completed.
Tekin stated that the duration of compulsory education could be shortened due to social expectations and the ease of access to information. The Minister of National Education also recalled the Council of Higher Education's (YÖK) preparation for reducing undergraduate education to 3 years.
Explaining that the report, which has been worked on for some time, is finished, Tekin said, "We will submit this to the President's approval. If a decision is made on this, there are different alternatives. We will most likely make a presentation about this at the first cabinet meeting."
Stating that a decision will be made within this year, Tekin added, "The education and training calendar for next year will be designed accordingly."
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin also made important statements regarding teacher appointment processes during a television program he attended. Tekin announced that the era of teacher appointments made via KPSS plus interviews has ended. Stating that they will bid farewell to the old system with this year's final interview-based appointments, Tekin announced that the appointment process for 15 thousand teachers will begin on November 24.
Tekin emphasized that a new system will be transitioned to with this appointment process. The Minister said, "With the final interview-based appointment, the era of appointments made via KPSS and interviews will be closed. In the new system, teachers will be recruited according to the needed branches."
NEW APPOINTMENT SYSTEM
Minister Tekin also touched upon the details of the new teacher appointment system. Tekin stated that teacher recruitment will be carried out according to the Academic Entrance Exam, called "AGS". Expressing that with this exam, the need for teachers in which branches and how many will be calculated, Minister Tekin said, "We will share the teacher requirement with the public according to the results of the AGS."
Tekin said that he would provide more details regarding the new teacher recruitments and that the training processes for teacher candidates would be initiated at the National Education Academy at the beginning of 2024.
HE SAID 'THE CLEANING PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED'
Minister Tekin also addressed the cleaning problem experienced in schools. Responding to allegations in previous years that there were insufficient cleaning staff in schools, the Minister argued that the problem has been largely solved. Tekin said that a partial work program was implemented for cleaning in previous years and a staff pool of 130 thousand was created.
The Minister stated that this number of personnel increased but was arranged to work only 3 days a week. Admitting that this practice did not adapt to the social structure, Tekin said, "With the regulations we made together with the Ministry of Labor, we have now solved the cleaning problem in schools."
HE ADMITTED THAT THE WORK PROGRAM WAS WRONG
Tekin admitted that the partial work program implemented in previous years was a wrong practice. Stating that Turkey's social structure does not support a 3-day-a-week work model, Tekin said that a new regulation has been initiated to improve this situation. The Minister emphasized that the social structure could not sufficiently adapt to the labor force adjustment program.
