School uniform change in the new academic year: Parents will be able to purchase from anywhere

More than 18 million students across Turkey will start classes on September 8. With the new clothing regulation to be implemented in schools this year, strict rules have been introduced to ensure parents are not aggrieved. The clothing determined by school administrations will be freely obtainable by parents without being tied to any specific brand or store.

THE BURDEN ON PARENTS WILL BE LIGHTENED

According to a report by Nuran Çakmakçı from the Hürriyet newspaper, Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin explained the rationale for the uniform policy as "strengthening the sense of equality and belonging." Tekin also emphasized that school clothing should not become an additional financial burden for parents. Each school will determine its own uniform in consultation with teachers, parents, and the school parent-teacher association.

THERE WILL BE NO LOGOS ON UNIFORMS

The determined clothing will not carry logos or special markings and cannot be changed for at least four years. Thus, students will be able to use the same uniform from primary school to middle school or from middle school to high school. The Ministry will also ensure that the clothing complies with health and pedagogical standards. Minister Tekin, who made a statement on the subject, said, "The primary duty of school administrators is simply to define the clothing the children will wear. For example, a definition will be made such as 'gray t-shirt, navy blue skirt or brown trousers, shirts in these colors.' Following this definition, they will announce the visual of the determined school uniform to our parents by publishing it on the school's website."

Parents will be able to purchase the clothing from stores, online sales points, or even produce them themselves. The determined visuals of the clothing, which will be selected from cotton and durable fabrics, will be shared on the schools' websites. The Ministry will meticulously examine potential complaints and strictly continue the necessary inspections.

WHY WAS THIS POLICY ADOPTED?

Minister Tekin responded to the question of why the uniform policy was reintroduced as follows:

"As you know, since the day we took office in June 2023, one of our primary priorities has been to consult with our teachers on every step we take. It has been this way until today; we have built every decision we have taken and every regulation we have implemented on such a culture of consultation. Fortunately, our teachers have opened not only the doors of their schools and classrooms but also their hearts to us everywhere we go. The issue of school uniforms was also brought to our attention by my esteemed colleagues in almost all of these visits. For this reason, as a result of the consultations we held with school administrations, teachers, and our parents, we decided to switch to a system where each school determines a school uniform that parents can obtain from wherever they wish. We anticipate that the implementation will also be beneficial in terms of monitoring students and ensuring discipline, both inside and outside the school."

On the other hand, Minister Tekin stated that students with disabilities can wear clothing suitable for their needs. Stating that they have also taken precautions to prevent schools from turning new uniforms into a source of profit, Minister Tekin said, "Our school administrators, parent-teacher associations, and teachers will also be freed from the accusation of 'being directed to certain places to purchase clothing.' Because the ease of finding the uniform also brings our parents the convenience of obtaining these clothes from wherever they want, even from different provinces. With the solid framework of the new application, this possibility has already been almost eliminated. In other words, we have taken the necessary measures to prevent a situation where schools turn this process into a source of profit," he said.
