AKOM issues warning with specific date: Freezing cold and snow are at Istanbul's doorstep
Istanbul is preparing to bid farewell to the deceptive mild weather of January. As temperatures, which have been above seasonal norms for days, drop rapidly, snowfall is expected across the city starting Sunday.
While most of the country is experiencing a day without precipitation, a significant break in air temperatures is on the horizon. While thermometers in the western regions are expected to rise by up to 6 degrees in some places, cold weather continues to increase its effect in the eastern provinces. According to experts, this temporary mild picture is a precursor to the harsh winter conditions approaching this weekend.
CRITICAL WARNING FROM AKOM: DATE HAS BEEN CLARIFIED
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) has shared its weekly weather assessment with the public. The report stated that temperatures will hover around seasonal norms until the weekend, but with the cold wave that will take the city under its influence starting Sunday, temperatures will drop by 3 to 5 degrees.
SNOWFALL IS COMING, ACCUMULATION EXPECTED
It is stated that the sleet expected to begin on Sunday will give way to heavy snowfall in the following hours. AKOM experts warn that due to the effect of the cold wave, snow depth could reach 5 to 10 centimeters in some parts of Istanbul.
