Conservation forests are being opened to mining activities: Permits are increasing

A new draft regulation is preparing the ground for mining activities to be permitted in conservation forests. This change paves the way for all metallic mines, primarily gold, as well as coal, oil, and natural gas projects, while imposing restrictions on stone and gravel quarry activities.

A NEW SOURCE OF DESTRUCTION FOR OLIVE GROVES AND THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

The destruction of the natural environment, which began with the relocation of olive groves, the occupation law, and changes to national parks, is now accelerating with this new regulation concerning conservation forests. Following protected areas and national parks, conservation forests are now being targeted to be made available for use by mining companies.

WHAT ARE CONSERVATION FORESTS?

Conservation forests are areas where the primary function is protection, established under Articles 23 and 24 of the Forest Law No. 6831 to prevent dangers such as erosion, avalanches, floods, inundations, and landslides. They also aim to protect water resources, soil, and wildlife.

PERMITS WILL BE GRANTED UNDER THE NEW DRAFT REGULATION

According to the new draft, although some activities such as stone and gravel quarries will remain prohibited, projects for metallic mines, as well as hard coal, lignite, oil, and natural gas, will be evaluated and permitted by the General Directorate. With the change in the regulation, the way will be opened for permits to be granted for activities in different groups of the mining law.

CONSERVATION FOREST AREA IN TURKEY

Of Turkey's total 23 million hectares of forest area, approximately 248 thousand hectares are in the status of conservation forest. As of 2020, there are 247 thousand 707 hectares of conservation forests in 54 separate regions across Turkey. These forests are set aside for protection purposes and provide security against environmental risks rather than for production.
