Earthquake expert warns: Earthquake swarm is coming

Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir, Director of the Earthquake Research and Application Center at Dokuz Eylül University, made important statements regarding the earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.9 and 4.1 that occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir.

Sözbilir said, "Following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 10, aftershocks shifted to the mountainous area south of Sındırgı and concentrated on the Emendere Fault Zone, which is not included in Turkey's active fault map, as well as on individual faults to the south of this fault."

Sözbilir stated that this situation indicates that dead faults in the mountainous area were triggered after the main shock of the Sındırgı earthquake and that these faults have become active again. He also noted that there are geothermal resources on these faults and that earthquake swarms not exceeding a magnitude of 5 could continue.

While seismic activity in the region is expected to persist, experts are warning the public to remain cautious.
