EU approves rules to reduce car emissions

The European Union continues to introduce regulations and set rules in almost every field. Most recently, the European Parliament, which announced the Euro 7 regulation aimed at ensuring the EU adapts more quickly to electric vehicles and reduces emissions, had remained at the center of controversy following this announcement. The softened regulation has managed to pass through parliament.

What does the softened Euro 7 regulation include?

Euro 7 will replace Euro 6, which aimed to reduce the harm to human health caused by vehicles with internal combustion engines that consume fossil fuels. Although automakers were in agreement with regulators on this point, they found the initial draft of Euro 7 to be overly costly. Stating that the production of cars emitting carbon dioxide will end in 2035, companies argued that it would be better to allocate their budgets to electric vehicles rather than trying to restrict internal combustion engines.

In the session held on Thursday, European Parliament officials voted to maintain rules restricting pollution from cars, including nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide. With Euro 7, limits for nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and ammonia will be updated. With the officialization of the draft that arrived last year, brakes and tires will now also have to meet certain criteria, and particles and pollution originating from them will be reduced. The new regulation will enter into force in 2026 for passenger vehicles and in 2027 for commercial vehicles.

In addition, Euro 7 aims to increase the battery durability of electric cars. Stricter emission limits for heavy-duty vehicles and the measurement of vehicle exhaust emissions according to real driving conditions are also among the rules.

With Euro 7, some restrictions will also come for commercial vehicles. For passenger vehicles, these restrictions will begin in 2025. The restrictions will become valid three months after the legislation is approved.

It will also affect Turkey

Although Euro 6 has remained largely unchanged as a result of the new Euro 7 negotiations, Turkey will also be affected by this legislative change. Vehicles produced in Turkey and planned to be sold to the European market must be produced in accordance with the new legislation. Vehicles produced in Europe will also have to meet the requirements of the same legislation even if they are to be sold in Turkey.
