Frightening summer forecast for Turkey: Record-breaking heat is on the way

Serious concerns are rising in meteorological circles that the summer of 2026 will be hotter than usual across Turkey. Ayşegül Akıncı Yüksel, the İzmir Provincial Representative of the TMMOB Chamber of Meteorological Engineers, stated that recent data indicates air temperatures will remain well above seasonal averages in the western parts of the country, especially in the Aegean region.

It is emphasized that the fact that spring months in Turkey have also been hot increases the expectation that this summer will be much more scorching. Yüksel stated, "According to the latest assessments, it is possible to reach extreme temperature values, especially in the Aegean and the west of the Marmara region. We anticipate that heat waves may occur more frequently and with greater intensity."

Temperatures in western provinces were recorded at 1-3 degrees above average throughout May, and June, July, and August are expected to follow a similar pattern. Analyses conducted for İzmir and its surroundings suggest new temperatures approaching the records of 44-45 degrees seen in previous years. Experts point out that the drought trend observed in global climate models will threaten water resources.

Yüksel also emphasized that the breaking of temperature records could be on the agenda due to the influence of high-pressure systems.

Experts, emphasizing that we are entering a summer period where the risk of water scarcity is increasing, underscored that both individuals and institutions must be mindful of their water consumption. Minimizing losses in water networks, opting for efficient methods such as drip irrigation in agricultural watering, and the effective use of existing resources are seen as essential.

Furthermore, warnings are being issued that one must be prepared for water shortages in the long term, as the sudden and localized heavy rainfall seen since the first months of the year has not replenished groundwater to the expected extent. In this context, increasing public awareness of water conservation and spreading sustainable water management practices across every sector are gaining importance.
