Giant rodent nightmare! No one can go out in four cities
Nutria rodents, which are spreading rapidly in South America, are threatening the ecosystem and posing a risk to public health.
Massive rodents known as nutria have become a serious problem in South America. These creatures, which cause major destruction especially in wetlands, also carry dangerous diseases such as tuberculosis and septicemia. This situation poses a serious threat to both the ecosystem and human health.
THE RATE OF SPREAD IN CITIES IS INCREASING
Nutria rodents are spreading rapidly in the United States in states such as Louisiana, California, Florida, and New York. These rodents, which draw attention with their large orange teeth and long tails, can grow up to 20 kilograms. Authorities are warning the public against the danger this species poses in cities.
A LEGACY OF THE FUR TRADE
Brought in for the fur trade in the 1890s, nutria rodents were released into the wild when the fur market collapsed. Breeding uncontrollably due to the lack of natural predators, these creatures cause great damage to agricultural lands and water structures.
CONTROL MEASURES ARE BEING TAKEN
In California, authorities announced that thousands of nutria rodents have been killed. In some states, the import, trade, and possession of this species have been banned. Hunting operations will be carried out outside of cities. U.S. officials state that the public needs to be educated to prevent the infestation.
