Plastic bags are becoming a thing of the past

In the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, a bill prepared to ban single-use plastic bags is drawing attention as an environmentally conscious step. If the law goes into effect, recyclable bags will be used in grocery stores instead of plastic bags, and these bags will be offered for a small fee. With this initiative, it is aimed to prevent more than 200 million plastic bags from entering nature annually.

With this law, Pennsylvania will join the ranks of states in the U.S. that implement plastic bag bans. Similar bans are already in effect in states such as California, New York, and New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, approximately 40 local governments already have regulations restricting the use of plastic bags. If the bill is passed, these practices will become widespread across the state.

Thanks to existing bans in Philadelphia, a reduction of nearly 950 million in plastic bag usage has been achieved. 200 million of this figure comes from Philadelphia alone. Experts state that with the law to be implemented statewide, environmental waste will decrease and consumers will be encouraged to carry reusable bags.

The retail sector is also adapting to this change. Aldi US took an eco-friendly step by removing plastic bags from all its stores at the beginning of 2024. The company's CEO, Jason Hart, stated that this initiative not only protects the environment but also reduces operating costs, and that these savings are reflected to customers.
