Cape Verde secures a point against Spain: First-ever tournament appearance
Making its first-ever appearance in the World Cup, Cape Verde earned its first point in its opening match by drawing against tournament favorites Spain in Group H.
In the first week of the 2026 World Cup Group H, Spain and Cape Verde faced off in Atlanta, USA.
In the match officiated by Jordanian referee Adham Makhadmeh, Spain hit the post in the first half.
The Spaniards, who held complete control of the game in the second half, struggled to create chances while playing at a low tempo.
The African team, meanwhile, prepared attacks through counter-attacks in the final moments of the match and tried to be effective with long-range shots.
For Spain, Lamine Yamal entered the game in the 71st minute, while the substitutions of Dani Olmo and Nico Williams also failed to produce results.
Ryan Mendes, who plays for Iğdır FK, and Trabzonspor's new signing Sidny Lopes Cabral started the match in the starting 11, while Başakşehir's Nuno Da Costa entered the game in the 61st minute.
With the match ending in a goalless draw, Cape Verde began the World Cup with 1 point.
Luis de la Fuente's students, who entered the match as favorites, dropped points.
Spain will face Saudi Arabia in the second match of the group, while Cape Verde will take on Uruguay.
