Elazığ remembers 2020! 4.9 magnitude tremor causes panic: Expert provides explanation

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Sivrice district of Elazığ.

In Elazığ, which experienced a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in 2020, the 4.9 magnitude tremor caused anxiety.

Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir, Director of the Earthquake Research and Application Center at Dokuz Eylül University (DEÜ), stated regarding the 4.9 magnitude earthquake in the Sivrice district of Elazığ, "Our initial observations show that this is an aftershock that developed in a section that acts as a seismic gap, which did not rupture during the January 24, 2020 Elazığ earthquake five years ago."

Sözbilir noted that the earthquake in Sivrice occurred on the western branch connected to the Pütürge segment of the East Anatolian Fault.

Stating that there is no cause for panic, Sözbilir added the following:

"Our initial observations show that this is an aftershock that developed in a section that acts as a seismic gap, which did not rupture during the January 4, 2020 Elazığ earthquake five years ago. Furthermore, it is normal for such small-scale earthquakes to occur due to the stress transfer that has been ongoing between Pütürge and Çelikhan following the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake."

In the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Elazığ on January 24, 2020, 37 people lost their lives in Elazığ and 4 people in Malatya.
