Chassis numbers of 10 vehicles altered: Supreme Court ruling on vehicle chassis numbers

According to the ruling of the 11th Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation, an investigation was launched in Balıkesir following a tip-off that a person engaged in the scrap metal business was attempting to put damaged vehicles back into traffic by altering their engine and chassis numbers.

As part of the investigation, a public lawsuit was filed against the individual, who was found to have altered the chassis numbers of 10 vehicles registered in their name, on charges of 'forgery of official documents'.

The Balıkesir 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance, which conducted the trial, determined that the commission of the alleged crime was established in line with witness statements and expert reports indicating that the chassis numbers of the vehicles had been forged.

The court sentenced the defendant to 2 years and 1 month in prison and also ordered the confiscation of the vehicles involved in the crime.

The defendant, claiming that the conviction and confiscation decision were contrary to procedure and law, appealed the local court's ruling.

The 11th Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation, which conducted the appellate review, found the sentence to be in accordance with the law and upheld it unanimously.

In the chamber's decision, it was noted that the proceedings during the trial process were conducted in accordance with procedure and law, that it was determined the act was committed by the defendant, and that the legal classification of the crime and the sanctions corresponding to the act were correctly determined.
