Death toll in funicular accident rises to 15: Three days of mourning declared in Portugal

The death toll has risen following an accident at the tourist Gloria Funicular in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.

Authorities stated that the number of people who lost their lives in the accident has risen to 15, and updated the number of injured to 18, including 1 child.

Stating that the cause of the accident is not yet known, officials announced that 5 of the injured are in critical condition. Authorities also reported that there are foreign nationals among those who lost their lives.

Eyewitnesses stated that the funicular went out of control and its brakes failed, causing it to derail and crash into a building.

In a statement, Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas said, "It is a tragic day for our city. Lisbon is mourning; this is a tragic, very tragic event."

In service since October 1885, the Gloria Funicular carries approximately three million passengers each year from Restauradores Square to the Bairro Alto, which is famous for its nightlife.
