Drunk nurse kills pedestrian behind the wheel: Went to drink coffee after the accident
In Bursa, a 73-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by a driver who allegedly got behind the wheel while intoxicated. It is alleged that instead of providing first aid after the accident, the driver went to drink coffee to lower her blood alcohol level; the moment of the accident was captured on security cameras.
The incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, March 7.
According to the information obtained, 73-year-old Gönül Eriş, a mother of two, left her home to buy bread.
Eriş, who was on her way back home after buying bread, was struck by a car with license plate 16 YU 965, driven by Burçin Ş. (34), who was traveling at high speed.
The elderly woman was thrown by the impact and sustained serious injuries.
Upon notification, health and police teams were dispatched to the scene.
Eriş, who was taken to the hospital by 112 Emergency Service teams, could not be saved despite all interventions.
Meanwhile, local residents claimed that the driver, who was learned to be a nurse at Bursa City Hospital, went to a nearby coffeehouse to drink coffee after the accident.
The driver, who was tested with a breathalyzer by police teams at the scene, was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.70 promille.
The driver, who objected to the breathalyzer result, gave a blood sample at the hospital. The test confirmed that the driver had a blood alcohol level of 0.67 promille.
The driver was brought to court and sentenced to house arrest. The grieving family, reacting to the decision, called for justice.
The son of the deceased woman, Serkan Eriş, said, "My mother went to buy bread on Saturday morning.
She lost her life after being hit by a woman while returning home.
We learned that the driver is a nurse. According to the claims of local residents, instead of providing first aid after the accident, she went to drink Turkish coffee so she wouldn't test positive for alcohol.
She tests positive for alcohol and is still sentenced to house arrest. Where is the justice in an intoxicated driver being released despite causing someone's death?"
The driver, Burçin Ş., defended herself in her statement, saying, "I had consumed alcohol last night. I performed the first intervention myself. I was the one who notified the 112 teams."
Local residents, however, stated, "The woman was coming from this direction. After the accident, she went to drink Turkish coffee."
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
