Frightening 'earthquake' statement from expert! Pointed to 6 provinces! 'Be prepared'

The magnitude 5 earthquake that occurred in Elazığ in recent days has unsettled those living in the region.

As geoscientists continue to issue consecutive statements regarding the Elazığ earthquake, Turkey's earthquake risk map has also come back to the agenda.

Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir, a faculty member at the Department of Geological Engineering, General Geology Division of the Faculty of Engineering at İzmir Dokuz Eylül University (DEÜ), evaluated the Elazığ earthquake and drew attention to seismic sources that have not yet ruptured, issuing an earthquake warning for 6 provinces.

Sözbilir stated that the magnitude 5 earthquake that occurred on November 8 in Elazığ could be considered an earthquake triggered by the Elazığ earthquake that occurred on the Pütürge segment in 2020.

WARNING OF EARTHQUAKE UP TO 7

Pointing out that the Palu segment has produced numerous earthquakes around magnitude 5 at certain intervals over the last 100 years, Sözbilir said that the Palu segment has not produced a destructive, major earthquake for over 200 years.

Stating that the Palu segment is one of the faults expected to produce a major earthquake, Sözbilir also pointed to the Adıyaman fault, which starts from the Palu district and extends southwest toward the Adıyaman province, stating, "We have determined that the Adıyaman fault is also an active fault. This fault also has the potential to produce an earthquake with a magnitude of up to 7. For this reason, I believe it is beneficial to continuously monitor the Adıyaman fault in seismological and geodetic terms."

CRITICAL WARNING FOR 6 PROVINCES

Pointing out that the Malatya fault, as well as the Savrun and Saimbeyli faults at the ends of the Çardak and Doğanşehir faults—which ruptured 9 hours after being triggered by the magnitude 7.8 Kahramanmaraş earthquake on February 6, 2023—continue to accumulate stress, Prof. Dr. Sözbilir said, "Similarly, stress accumulation continues on fault segments belonging to the Dead Sea fault, such as the Sakçagöz, Yesemek, and Hacıpaşa faults south of the Narlı fault, a portion of which ruptured in the February 6, 2023 earthquake."

Prof. Dr. Sözbilir stated, "Due to the existence of seismic sources that have not yet ruptured, urgent measures must be taken regarding earthquake preparedness, especially in the provinces of Bingöl, Adıyaman, Malatya, Gaziantep, Hatay, and Adana, and I believe that raising public awareness is also vitally important."
