On the same day, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was elected as the first President of the Republic by the unanimous vote of 158 deputies.

Taking the podium amidst applause, Atatürk addressed the General Assembly of the Parliament, saying, “Our nation will more easily demonstrate its inherent characteristics and merit to the civilized world under the name of the new government. The Republic of Turkey will prove its rightful place in the world with its works. The Republic of Turkey will be happy, successful, and victorious.”
