From the parliamentary archives to the present: The birth certificate of the Republic has emerged!

On the evening of October 29, 1923, a historic step was taken for the proclamation of the Republic at a meeting held in the 1st Parliament building.

"Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation" With the implementation of the principle, documents from the state archives carry the legal foundation of the Republic to the present day...

The original document of the decision that proclaimed the Republic contains the following expressions:

"Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation. The form of administration is based on the principle of the people personally and effectively managing their own destiny. The form of government of the State of Turkey is a Republic."

These articles were accepted with applause and cries of "Long live the Republic."

On the same day, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was elected as the first President of the Republic by the unanimous vote of 158 deputies.

Taking the podium amidst applause, Atatürk addressed the General Assembly of the Parliament, saying, “Our nation will more easily demonstrate its inherent characteristics and merit to the civilized world under the name of the new government. The Republic of Turkey will prove its rightful place in the world with its works. The Republic of Turkey will be happy, successful, and victorious.”

Following the speech, prayers were recited.

The establishment of the Republic and the election of its first President were announced to the whole world with a 101-gun salute.

Records of the historic moments that brought about the birth of the Republic of Turkey 101 years ago continue to be carefully preserved in the parliamentary archives.
