Google's move regarding Ekrem İmamoğlu had drawn attention: They took a step back!

Developments that shook the political agenda took place in Istanbul over the last 24 hours. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested yesterday as part of a "corruption" investigation conducted against him and sent to Silivri Prison. Subsequently, the Ministry of Interior announced that İmamoğlu had been suspended from his duties as a temporary measure.

The Ministry also announced that Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık had been removed from office and that a trustee had been appointed to replace Şişli Mayor Resul Emrah Şahan.

Ministry: "Temporary measure" decision

In the statement made by the Ministry of Interior, the grounds for İmamoğlu's arrest were included. The statement used the following expressions:

"Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has been arrested in accordance with the decision of the Istanbul 10th Criminal Court of Peace dated 23.03.2025 and numbered 2025/347 on charges of unlawfully recording personal data, accepting bribes, rigging tenders of public institutions or organizations, and establishing an organization for the purpose of committing crimes. He has been suspended from his duties as a temporary measure in accordance with Article 127 of the Constitution and Article 47 of the Municipal Law No. 5393."

JET MOVE FROM GOOGLE: TITLE REMOVED

Following the developments, a remarkable movement also took place in the digital sphere. Google removed the title of "Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor" from Ekrem İmamoğlu's biography section.

When İmamoğlu's name was searched, only the phrases "Businessperson and former Beylikdüzü Mayor" began to appear.

STEP BACK AFTER BACKLASH

Following the reactions, a quick step back came from Google. The company re-added the title of "Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor" to İmamoğlu's biography.
