In Istanbul's Maltepe district, Darıush Tahbaz went to the Küçükyalı Police Station and filed a missing person report for his cousin, Iranian national Farkhundeh Ghaem Maghami (68), stating that he had not heard from her since April 11. The Public Security Bureau's Missing Persons Unit launched an investigation upon the report. It was learned that the Iranian woman had been living in Istanbul for approximately 20 years and resided in the Küçükyalı neighborhood of Maltepe. Inquiries made in the vicinity of her home revealed that she lived a quiet life and paid her rent, bills, and dues regularly. As part of the investigation, a search was conducted at the Iranian woman's home. Police teams expanded their investigation after discovering that meals she had prepared were left out and had spoiled.

Message sent to apartment WhatsApp group saying "I am on vacation" sheds light on the murder

During their investigation, the Missing Persons Unit learned that the Iranian woman had lived in Istanbul for about 20 years and could speak Turkish very well, but could not write in Turkish. Consequently, the fact that Farkhundeh wrote "Tatildeyim" (I am on vacation) in Turkish letters to the apartment's WhatsApp group on April 18 caught the attention of the teams. Examining the Iranian woman's call history, the teams determined through HTS (Historical Traffic Search) records that the last person she spoke with was Erkan B. (49), who lives in Esenyurt. The teams, who began monitoring Erkan B., determined from security camera footage that the suspect picked the woman up from her home on April 14 and that they ate together at a restaurant in Büyükçekmece.
