European cups will be played in a league format this season instead of the classic group stage. Here are the details of the new format...
The draw for the league phase of European football's second-tier club competition was held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
Among the teams representing Turkey in the tournament, Fenerbahçe entered the draw from the second pot, Galatasaray from the third, and Beşiktaş from the fourth.
Fenerbahçe has been drawn against Manchester United (England), Slavia Prague (Czech Republic) (A), Olympique Lyonnais (France), AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands) (A), Union Saint-Gilloise (Belgium), Midtjylland (Denmark) (A), Athletic Bilbao (Spain), and Twente (Netherlands) (A) in the league phase.
Galatasaray's opponents in the league phase are Tottenham (England), Ajax (Netherlands) (A), PAOK (Greece), AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands) (A), Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine), Malmö (Sweden) (A), Elfsborg (Sweden), and RFS (Latvia) (A).
Beşiktaş will compete in the league phase against Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany), Ajax (Netherlands) (A), Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel), Olympique Lyonnais (France) (A), Malmö (Sweden), Bodø/Glimt (Norway) (A), Athletic Bilbao (Spain), and Twente (Netherlands) (A).
Starting this season, the UEFA Europa League will be organized in a league format with the participation of 36 teams, replacing the classic group stage.
In the Europa League, each team will face 8 different opponents, with 4 matches at home and 4 away.
Teams that finish in the top 8 will advance directly to the round of 16. Teams that finish between 9th and 24th place in the league will compete in a play-off round to try and secure a ticket to the round of 16. Teams that finish outside the top 24 will be eliminated from European competition.
With the completion of the league phase, the tournament will switch to a two-legged knockout system starting from the play-off round.
