Mosque muezzin stabbed by individual he warned: Investigation continues
In Mersin, a mosque muezzin was stabbed in the leg by an individual he had warned after discovering drug paraphernalia. The incident was captured on security cameras, and the suspect was neutralized by citizens and handed over to the police.
The incident took place at the Güneyli Mosque in the Çilek neighborhood of the central Akdeniz district. According to allegations, the mosque's muezzin, Ömer Tekdemir, discovered drug paraphernalia and subsequently noticed and warned an individual in the mosque courtyard who was not a resident of the neighborhood.
The individual wounded the muezzin in the leg with a knife. Citizens at the mosque neutralized the individual and notified the police. The suspect was handed over to the police team that arrived at the scene.
The injured Tekdemir pointed to the drug paraphernalia and stated that the individual had stabbed him. Tekdemir, who noted that he had informed the congregation about the fight against drugs last Friday, stated that they would continue the struggle regardless of whether he was stabbed or even if he were to die.
The moment of the incident was captured second-by-second on security cameras. The footage shows the suspect, who was sitting, quickly getting up and approaching the muezzin before stabbing him. The investigation into the suspect, who was taken into custody and reportedly refused to give his name, is ongoing.
