New claim from a figure close to the AKP following the call to 'bury the weapons': 'Its impact is huge'
Following the calls regarding Öcalan in politics, statements continue to come from figures close to the AKP regarding the new process. Former AKP deputy and Yeni Şafak columnist Mehmet Metiner provided information about the new opening process.
MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's call to PKK leader Öcalan continues to maintain its relevance in politics.
In his previous statement, the MHP leader had called for Öcalan to come to Parliament and speak at the DEM Party group meeting, to announce that he has disbanded the PKK, and as a result, to benefit from the right to hope.
Bahçeli later stated in his remarks that he stood behind this call. Following these calls, it was alleged that a deep rift had occurred within the People's Alliance.
However, President and AKP Chairman Erdoğan stated in the latest group meeting that he supported the statements made by Bahçeli and that the People's Alliance was in consensus.
Following all these developments, pro-government Yeni Şafak columnist and former AKP MP Mehmet Metiner wrote an article about the new resolution process.
Former AKP MP and Yeni Şafak columnist Mehmet Metiner, in his article addressing the words of President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at his party's group meeting, "You will bury the weapons. The moment you bury the weapons, for us, everything is about paving the way for you," included his views on the meeting between the DEM Party and Abdullah Öcalan. Stating, "The DEM will meet with Öcalan sooner or later," Metiner assessed, "If Öcalan is to make a call, there is also a need for political actors inside to stand behind this call. Names like Selahattin Demirtaş and Ahmet Türk are important in this respect."
Highlights from Metiner's article are as follows:
"The DEM will meet with Öcalan sooner or later.
If this meeting is achieved, it means the negotiations with Öcalan have matured.
Otherwise, the DEM-Öcalan meeting would do more harm than good.
If Öcalan makes a call in this meeting to bury the weapons and decide on politics, this does not mean that weapons will be laid down the very next day, but it opens a new door of opportunity for democratic politics.
Öcalan has spiritual power.
Öcalanism is a strong tendency both in Qandil and among the masses consolidated by Qandil.
Its impact on the DEM base is also huge.
Recently, the influence of Demirtaş, along with Öcalan, has visibly increased among the new generation of Kurdish politicians.
Demirtaş is the political idol of these new generation Kurds.
In the eyes of many, he is even more important than Öcalan.
This position of Demirtaş disturbs Qandil, Öcalan, and the DEM alike.
But the truth cannot be covered up.
If Öcalan is to make a call, there is also a need for political actors inside to stand behind this call.
Names like Selahattin Demirtaş and Ahmet Türk are important in this respect.
Qandil does not want to take a stand against Öcalan.
But it drags its feet.
The DEM makes its choice in favor of Öcalan but does not dare to take a stand against Qandil. Because the power that is truly decisive over the DEM from the outside, with its material and physical structure, and furthermore with its power of sanction, is Qandil.
If Qandil pulls the plug on the DEM, the DEM becomes politically ineffective and powerless.
Will Öcalan come out and make a call?
When he does, will Qandil and the DEM listen to him?
If Öcalan displays a determined stance and the state also puts forward a practice within the framework I mentioned, the line resisting Öcalan is doomed to lose.
A deep political and social rift will emerge.
When you defeat Qandil politically and, most importantly, when you put forward a practice that wins over the Kurds, the existence of weapons will forever cease to be a threat factor in the process.
That is why a persuasive and confidence-building practice is essential."
