New era in electricity bills began on January 1: Who will be affected by the new system
A new era in electricity billing began in Turkey on January 1. With the new period, there is curiosity about who will be affected by the system. Here is what you need to know about the subject.
The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) has made an important regulation regarding electricity consumption. With the new regulation published in the Official Gazette, an annual electricity consumption limit of 5 thousand kilowatt-hours (kWh) has been introduced for residential, housing complex, and commercial subscribers, effective from January 1, 2025. The subsidy support provided by the state has been removed for consumption above this limit.
With the new regulation, citizens will have to monitor their monthly electricity consumption more closely. Subscribers who exceed the 5 thousand kWh limit will face higher bills. This situation could create a significant financial burden, especially for households where electricity consumption for heating increases during the winter months.
However, there are some exceptions in the regulation. Places such as mosques, cemevis, and AFAD shelter centers will not be evaluated within the scope of the new limitation. The electricity consumption of these institutions will continue within the framework of previous regulations.
According to the report in Birgün, the controversial regulation by the Energy Market Regulatory Board (EPDK) has been published in the Official Gazette and has entered into force. The regulation will be valid as of January 1.
Accordingly, the limits effective from January 1, 2025, have been set at 5 thousand kilowatt-hours annually for residential subscribers as well. Consumers who exceed this limit will not be able to benefit from state subsidies.
Mosques, cemevis, places of worship, associations, AFAD, temporary shelter centers, families of martyrs, and combat/disabled veterans will be exempt from the regulation.
Among the approximately 40 million residential subscribers, there are about 1.2 million subscribers with high consumption. In this case, 3 percent of subscribers are expected to be affected by the new regulation.
It is stated that the bills of subscribers who exceed the limit with the regulation could double.
