Pistachio scandal: Carcinogenic substance detected

Turkey, which has a significant share in global pistachio production, is facing a situation that has caused concern in the sector following this incident. The high levels of aflatoxin, which pose a major risk to food safety, constitute a critical threat, especially for exports.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has announced that it will tighten inspections and organize training programs for producers to bring aflatoxin levels under control.

This situation, caused by high aflatoxin rates, could have negative effects on the health and economic interests of both producers and consumers. This problem in the export of pistachios, one of Turkey's valuable agricultural products, carries the risk of causing economic losses in the sector.

WHAT IS AFLATOXIN?

Aflatoxins are toxic compounds produced by Aspergillus fungi and are generally found in agricultural products such as nuts, grains, and oilseeds.

These toxins, which have serious effects on human health, pose a major threat to food safety due to their carcinogenic properties, which particularly increase the risk of liver cancer. For this reason, the meticulous monitoring of aflatoxin levels in food products is of great importance for consumer health and agricultural exports.
