The number of people who lost their lives in the flood disaster that struck eastern Spain has reached 250. According to reports in the Spanish press, some areas still cannot be reached. As the exact number of missing persons is not yet known, there are concerns that the death toll may rise.
According to experts, the region experienced a year's worth of rainfall under normal conditions in just 8 hours.
The Spanish State Meteorological Agency announced that the rainfall in the Valencia region, which it described as the "worst period of the century," fell in an unprecedented manner. Meteorologists also attribute the disaster to a weather phenomenon called the 'DANA phenomenon.' Accordingly, the extreme rainfall was caused by cold air in the upper layers of the atmosphere colliding with hot and humid air originating from the Mediterranean that was rising very rapidly.
