The cells where Narin Güran suspects are being held have been revealed! Here are all the details
The defendants on trial in the Narin Güran murder case in Diyarbakır are being held in solitary confinement cells in prisons under high-security measures. The suspects, who are only allowed a 30-minute phone call per week, have had their communication completely cut off. Here are all the details regarding the prison conditions of the Narin Güran suspects and the trial process...
8-year-old Narin Güran went missing on August 21 while returning from a Quran course in the rural Tavşantepe neighborhood of the Bağlar district in central Diyarbakır.
Teams mobilized for Narin found the unfortunate girl's body on the 19th day of the search efforts. In the investigation closely followed by the public, mother Yüksel Güran, uncle Salim Güran, brother Enes Güran, and the confessor Nevzat Bahtiyar were arrested on charges of 'intentional killing of a child in complicity'.
The defendants, who appeared before the judge for the first time last week, acted in unison and did not utter a single word that would shed light on the murder. The situation of Narin's killers in prison has also become a subject of curiosity. In a report by Musa Kesler from Hürriyet, details were included such as the fact that the suspects are kept in single-person sections in prisons, they do not have televisions, and the correctional officers who come into contact with them wear body cameras.
Here are the details...
In the investigation conducted by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, 12 people were arrested, including her uncle Salim Güran, in whose car DNA traces belonging to Narin were found; Nevzat Bahtiyar, who confessed to moving the body; Narin's mother Yüksel Güran; and her brother Enes Güran.
A lawsuit was filed against 4 of these individuals, and their trial began last week. The investigation regarding the other eight arrested individuals was separated. In the coming days, the lawsuit against them will also be filed and merged with the current case, which has already begun hearings. These 12 arrested suspects are distributed across 6 separate prisons in Diyarbakır.
NEVZAT AND SALIM ARE IN A 'HIGH-SECURITY' PRISON
The most significant names, Nevzat Bahtiyar and uncle Salim Güran, are in a 'high-security' prison in Diyarbakır. They are in the same prison but are kept in different blocks.
They have no opportunity to see or communicate with each other. Enes Güran is being held in a T-type prison. Yüksel Güran is staying in a women's prison.
THERE ARE NO TELEVISIONS IN THEIR ROOMS
The suspects are staying in single-person sections. They do not have televisions in their rooms. Enes Güran is in a T-type prison. He is also staying alone. He does not have a television either.
THE MOTHER IS STAYING ALONE IN PRISON
Mother Yüksel Güran is also being held in a single-person section in the women's prison. 15-year-old R.A. is in a juvenile detention center, staying with two Syrian detainees.
30 MINUTES OF PHONE CALL RIGHTS
The suspects in prison have the right to 30 minutes of phone calls per week. They cannot have open visits, but they can be visited by three people they have named on one of the first four days of the week. Care is also taken to ensure that the visitor days of Nevzat Bahtiyar and Salim Güran, who are in the same prison, do not overlap.
Their lawyers can also visit whenever they wish. According to the relevant regulations, they can only spend 3,500 liras per week. They cannot keep this money in cash. They can make purchases from the prison canteen with receipts and vouchers.
They can also meet their needs such as refrigerators, tea urns, and fans from the canteen. So far, there have been no requests to meet with each other. Even if there were, this request would not be accepted as it is not in accordance with the regulations. There has been no unrest or disciplinary issues so far.
OFFICERS APPROACH WITH BODY CAMERAS
In the wards where the sleeping and living areas are separate, only the living area (seating section) is monitored by cameras. The corridors are also recorded by cameras.
However, correctional officers wear body cameras. Every contact they have with the detainees is recorded by these cameras. Thus, precautions are taken against allegations of torture, ill-treatment, or similar claims.
FIRST PENALTY FOR ILLEGAL ELECTRICITY
In the trial that began in Diyarbakır on November 7, Salim Güran was asked about a voice recording he had deleted from his phone. Salim Güran had claimed that he used illegal electricity to irrigate his field. The lawyers also stated that Salim Güran had been fined for using illegal electricity.
Güran was fined a total of 1 million 698 thousand liras by the relevant electricity distribution authority for three separate reasons during the period between May and August.
The reasons for the penalty were cited as 'neutral device usage', 'draining', and 'switch' tampering.
