Timur Cihantimur to appear in court! Will he be extradited to Turkey?

On the night of March 1, Timur Cihantimur, driving without a license, caused the death of Oğuz Murat Aci and injured four others.

Following the accident, Cihantimur fled to the US via Egypt with his mother, Eylem Tok. Turkey has requested the extradition of both Cihantimur and his mother, based on the extradition treaty between the two countries.

Cihantimur and his mother were apprehended in Boston on June 14. During their initial hearings, it was decided that the extradition cases for Cihantimur and his mother would be handled separately.

Cihantimur's lawyers argued that their client does not wish to be extradited to Turkey and that the incident was an accident. His lawyers stated that Cihantimur has no prior criminal record, is a US citizen, and grew up in Turkey, while also expressing that the conditions under which he is being held are extremely negative.

They also stated that he has been unable to access necessary medication due to health issues and is experiencing psychological distress.

Judge Donald Cabell decided that Cihantimur should remain in custody. His lawyers announced that they would offer real estate worth 2 million dollars, belonging to his father in Turkey, as collateral for his release on bail.

However, the court rejected this application, stating that there is a risk of Cihantimur fleeing.

Cihantimur was subsequently transferred to the Manson Youth Institution in the state of Connecticut. His lawyers argued that the conditions there were also negative, claiming this violated his right to a fair trial, and requested a transfer to another correctional facility.

The judge accepted this request and decided that Cihantimur should be transferred to another correctional facility in the state of New Jersey.

Currently, Cihantimur's extradition case to Turkey is ongoing, and he will appear before Judge Cabell one last time at the decision hearing.
