The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has published its "Internal Migration Statistics" bulletin for the year 2023.

According to the data, the rate of the population migrating between provinces in the country, which was 3.18 percent in the 2007-2008 period, followed a fluctuating course over the years and reached 4.04 percent in 2023.

In this context, 3 million 450 thousand 953 people migrated between provinces in Turkey last year. Of this population, 47.9 percent were men and 52.1 percent were women.

In the distribution of the population migrating between provinces in Turkey, Istanbul was identified as the province receiving the most migration with 412 thousand 707 people.

Istanbul was followed by Ankara with 232 thousand 700 people and Izmir with 147 thousand 765 people, respectively.

The provinces receiving the least migration were Ardahan with 6 thousand 856 people, Bayburt with 10 thousand 202 people, and Tunceli with 11 thousand 806 people, respectively.

While Istanbul was the province with the highest outward migration with 581 thousand 330 people, it was followed by Ankara with 208 thousand 740 people and Hatay with 164 thousand 247 people.

The provinces with the lowest outward migration were determined to be Ardahan with 6 thousand 811 people, Tunceli with 7 thousand 234 people, and Kilis with 7 thousand 604 people, respectively.

In Turkey, the highest migration mobility last year occurred in the 20-24 age group, with 647 thousand 191 people. In this age group, 43.4 percent of those who migrated were men, while 56.6 percent were women.

Of those who migrated between provinces last year, 601 thousand 481 migrated as dependents of one of the members of the household. When other reasons for migration were examined, it was observed that 518 thousand 16 people migrated for better housing and living conditions, and 512 thousand 11 people migrated for education.

When examining the reasons for migration by gender in Turkey in 2023, the primary reason for migration among men was better housing and living conditions, with 257,277 people, while for women, it was migration dependent on a member of the household, with 361,015 people.

For men, migration dependent on a member of the household and natural disasters/emergencies, and for women, education and natural disasters/emergencies were among the other significant reasons for migration.
