Verdict in smuggling case involving MP Ün's vehicle: Prison and fines

The non-detained defendants F.A. and Ç.R.Ç. did not attend the hearing held at the Edirne 1st Criminal Court of First Instance.

A lawyer for one of the defendants was present in court.

The court panel sentenced both defendants to 2 years, 2 months, and 7 days in prison each.

The defendants were also each fined 131 thousand 250 Turkish Liras.

Background of the incident

On September 20, 2024, a luxury SUV with the license plate 34 EKE 86, equipped with emergency lights and determined to belong to CHP Edirne MP Ediz Ün, was signaled to stop by police teams as it attempted to pass through the TEM Highway toll booths after entering from Bulgaria via the Kapıkule Border Gate. The vehicle did not stop and fled, leading to a police pursuit.

The vehicle, which was attempting to flee with its sirens on, was stopped after 600 meters.

F.A. and Ç.R.Ç., who were in the vehicle, surrendered 530 empty electronic cigarette boxes, 2 thousand 242 electronic cigarette kits, 2 thousand 790 electronic cigarette heads, 1 thousand 275 electronic cigarette igniters, 130 liquid reservoirs, and 18 cigarette liquids to security forces.

It was determined that the luxury vehicle with the license plate 34 EKE 86, belonging to Edirne MP Ediz Ün, had traveled to Bulgaria 61 times.

Ediz Ün resigned from the CHP on September 28, 2024, following the incident.
